What is a SEER Rating and Why is it Important?

SEER Ratings and Why They Matter

If your energy bill climbs during peak heating and cooling seasons, your HVAC may not be SEER compliant, but what is a SEER rating and why is it important?  SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and refers to a rating system defined by the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute.  The system was designed to create a standard for HVAC and refrigeration equipment to help consumers save on energy and reduce their carbon footprint.  A high SEER rating is a good thing because it means your system is using a minimal amount of energy.  While the Federal Government requires new units to rank at a minimum of 14 on the scale, some newer HVAC systems can rank 16 and higher on the SEER scale.  These units use green technology and are not only better for the environment but require less electricity and maintenance, saving you up to 40% on your heating and cooling costs.

Is it Worth Replacing Your Old HVAC?

Inflated energy costs could mean your HVAC unit is showing its age.  An out of date system is often the root cause of a hefty monthly overhead, as the SEER rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is often much lower on older units.  With a unit that’s SEER compliant, you could save hundreds of dollars over the course of the year.

If you’re like millions of other Americans you’ve felt the pain of buying a new AC unit and paying the installation fees.  Having function heating and AC is a necessity, but should you replace your HVAC or try to save money by repairing your existing unit?  You may think paying for repairs is the most cost effective option but depending on the age and quality of your system, you could face outrageous prices!  You’ll be paying your repairman for the assessment, the parts, and the labor.  When all is said and done the end cost could bring you 50% closer to the price of buying a new unit outright.  Why hold onto a unit that could be costing you when you can get a new HVAC system with a higher SEER rating?
